Herbal Bounty

Perhaps bounty is too big a word
for the herbs that flourish in pots on our deck.
They are neither abundant nor plenty.
But they are lush enough for me to take pleasure
in their ready access just outside my door.
Basil is a synonym for summer.
A seasonal annual that thrives in warmth
and adds its flavor and aroma to
the tomatoes and corn that share its season.
It deserves the extra space of unshared pots.
The thyme, rosemary and oregano
cluster together in shared space.
Valued additions,to be sure, but not used
as prolifically as basil, the true herb of summer.

About Mary Jane

I am a retired English teacher. My husband, Frank, and I have lived on Cape Cod since 2000. I am a lifelong bread baker and writer and have been posting a blog on Falmouth Patch for the last few years. Savory Seasons has been largely devoted to recipes and food in general. I am hoping to expand my focus in this new blog.
