Same Style

Something caught my eye as I was headed downstairs this morning past the rogues’ gallery of family pictures that line our stairwell. A picture of a younger me with a three year old Betsy at Stone Zoo.

What caused me to pause was the fact that I was wearing the same Lands’End Drifter crew neck sweater and jeans that I have on today. Well, at least the exact same style. My feet are not visible in the picture, but my guess is that there are a pair of New Balance sneakers on my feet.

Now here’s a question to ponder. Have I settled on a comfortable style that works for me or just stopped paying attention? Should I be thinking about looking into clothing a bit more stylish and appropriate for my age instead of just replacing my chinos and jeans and button down shirts and crew necked sweaters?

But then I ask myself “Why?” I just re-read the last paragraph. Wonder what I meant by clothing “appropriate for my age.” As though the wearing of jeans has a cut off date. My guess is that our generation will be wearing them in the nursing home.

Maybe it’s inertia or a dislike of change or just a lack of interest, but as long as Lands’End and L.L. Bean keep churning out their catalogs, I’ll keep replacing rather than re-inventing.
