First Day of School

School is starting without me yet again.
Feeling a bit nostalgic; a little sad,
like a kid left out of a game.
Missing the excitement.
The heady rush of new beginnings.
The promise of a new slate
on which to write this year’s story.
The feeling will pass.
Reality, perhaps even tinged
with a touch of relief, will set in.
With retirement, the venue has changed.
The rhythm of life is more
comfortable steady hum than hip-hop beat,
but life remains full and
the story is still being written.

About Mary Jane

I am a retired English teacher. My husband, Frank, and I have lived on Cape Cod since 2000. I am a lifelong bread baker and writer and have been posting a blog on Falmouth Patch for the last few years. Savory Seasons has been largely devoted to recipes and food in general. I am hoping to expand my focus in this new blog.

Your post makes me nostalgic, too. My sister teaches kindergarten. On his way to the bus when he was leaving yesterday, Jacob told her he loved her. It made her day.
P.S. Love the photo of you with the tray. 🙂
