Subtle Signs of Change

IMG_0083

Soft heaviness of summer
can’t disguise
the subtle signs
of change in the air.
Morning light
is slower to arrive.
Daylight fades earlier.
Hydrangeas in
riotous full bloom,
while the impatiens
show their gawky,
teenage growth.
Like squirrels,
we scamper from
one activity to another.
Grasping the warmth,
the daylight, the freedom,
before acorns litter the deck,
and the changes become
pronounced rather than subtle.

About Mary Jane

I am a retired English teacher. My husband, Frank, and I have lived on Cape Cod since 2000. I am a lifelong bread baker and writer and have been posting a blog on Falmouth Patch for the last few years. Savory Seasons has been largely devoted to recipes and food in general. I am hoping to expand my focus in this new blog.
