We live in a different world from our parents and certainly from our grandparents. Technology has taken center stage. But one thing remains the same. The best gift we can give children is the gift of time and attention.
Today, Grampy is explaining the fine points of downloading and screen maintenance on an iPad to Lauren. The subject hardly matters. The fact that they are sitting at a table spending time together is what counts.
She may be picking up some pointers on using her iPad more efficiently, but more importantly, she’s learning that Grampy cares enough to spend time with her to share this information.
Interesting the advice that stays with you through the years. At one point in my teaching career, I was transferred to a 3’rd grade classroom. According to the state, I was certified to teach elementary grades. Certified and qualified don’t always go hand in hand.
I remember seeking out an experienced 3’rd grade teacher for advice. She said that the most important thing was to pay attention to them. To let each child know that you cared about him or her and that you were there to listen to their thoughts and questions. She helped me to understand that teaching, at its best, is child centered, rather than subject centered.
Grampy may not have teacher certification from the state, but he’s definitely kid approved.
