Easter Morning

IMG_2031 IMG_2032

There’s a chill in the air.
I can’t pretend otherwise.
But the birds are singing.
Not just one lonely bird
who arrived North too early,
but a whole contingent of voices
breaking the stillness
of early morning.
Squirrels are pausing
to do happy dances
as they dart across lawns
and scale tree branches.
One little crocus, braver
or more contrary, not sure which,
has broken free from his band of brothers
and staked his claim on the lawn.
How does he know that we wouldn’t
dream of mowing him down?

About Mary Jane

I am a retired English teacher. My husband, Frank, and I have lived on Cape Cod since 2000. I am a lifelong bread baker and writer and have been posting a blog on Falmouth Patch for the last few years. Savory Seasons has been largely devoted to recipes and food in general. I am hoping to expand my focus in this new blog.
